How To Answer Parent Household Information Questions For FAFSA®

Here's how to correctly enter the parent's family size, number in college, and federal benefits questions.

34. Family Size

Family size is an important part of the FAFSA Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation. It's used to determine how much financial aid you may receive. Furthermore, schools will also look at this number to determine scholarships and grants.

How To Answer These Questions

  • Enter the number of people in your household, including yourself, your spouse, and your dependent children (even if they are at college).
  • Since this is for the 2026-27 academic year, include any people or children you'll provide over half their support for between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027. This can apply if you're expecting another child, or potentially a parent is moving in with you.

35. Number In College

This question is designed to be used by colleges to determine if multiple siblings are in college. While the Student Aid Index (SAI) phased out using this number for undergraduate, some schools still might use it.

  • Enter the number of members in the student's family who will be in college between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027.

  • Select any of the federal or state benefits you or a member of your household receive, otherwise select "None of these apply".
