cash app taxes alternatives

Zelle, the widely used peer-to-peer payment service backed by some major U.S. banks, is discontinuing its standalone app. As of March 31, 2025, users will no longer be able to send or receive money through the Zelle app. Instead, they must access the service through their bank’s mobile app or online banking.

This shift is part of Zelle’s long-term strategy to consolidate its service within bank apps. The standalone app will no longer accept new enrollments. For users whose banks do not support Zelle, this change means they will need to find an alternative payment platform.

In partnership with Cash App, let’s dive in and look at why Cash App is a compelling replacement for Zelle and why it could actually become your primary banking app. Check out Cash App here if you just want to get started >>

Why Cash App Is A Great Zelle Alternative

With Zelle’s standalone app disappearing, users may need a new peer-to-peer payment app. Cash App stands out as one of the best alternatives, offering an easy way to send and receive money without requiring a bank account.

Unlike Zelle, which is strictly tied to bank transactions, Cash App is a stand-alone financial platform. Users can link a debit card, bank account, or even store money within Cash App itself. For those who relied on Zelle’s convenience but now need another way to move money, Cash App is an easy to understand alternative.

Key advantages of Cash App:

  • Accessibility: Unlike Zelle, Cash App does not require a traditional bank account to operate.
  • Instant Transfers: Standard transfers to a bank account are free (1-3 business days), while instant transfers to a debit card are available for a small fee.
  • No Bank Restrictions: With Zelle now confined to banking apps, Cash App provides a fully independent platform that works regardless of where you bank.

Cash App's Additional Features Make It Stand Out

Cash App does more than just send and receive money. It has expanded into a full-service financial app that offers saving, investing, and even tax preparation services.

Banking Services: Cash App allows direct deposit, enabling users to receive their paychecks within the app. It also offers a free Visa debit card, known as the Cash Card, which can be used for purchases and ATM withdrawals. Users who receive at least $300 in direct deposits per month qualify for in-network ATM fee reimbursements.

Investing and Crypto: Unlike Zelle, which is strictly for bank transactions, Cash App allows users to invest in stocks and even buy Bitcoin directly from the app. Fractional stock investing is also available, making it easy for users to start investing with as little as $1.

Cash Boosts: One of Cash App’s standout features is its Boost program, which offers instant discounts at select retailers when using the Cash Card. Users can save money on everyday purchases without needing traditional coupons or rewards programs.

Final Thoughts

With Zelle’s standalone app disappearing, many users will need to find a new way to send and receive money. While those who bank with Zelle-supported institutions can continue using the service through their bank’s app, those without access may find Cash App to be a better option.

Plus, with Cash App you don’t need to worry if your specific bank or credit union even supports Zelle - since some do, and some don’t.

With its flexible payment system, banking features, and investment tools, Cash App goes beyond simple money transfers to provide a full range of financial services.
