Deciding to go to business school is a big decision. While expensive, a business degree, especially an MBA, can help you get your foot in the door at highly sought-after companies and potentially allow you to advance quickly through the ranks.

The GMAT – or Graduate Management Admission Test – is the main standardized test to take if you’re planning on going to business school. Getting
a good score on the GMAT can make you a more attractive candidate at top business schools.

Veritas Prep was a test prep company that specialized in helping students and young professionals prepare for the GMAT. But it's now a part of Varsity Tutors, and offers instructor-led GMAT prep courses online from the comfort of your home.

Should you work with
Varsity Tutors to study for the GMAT? In this review, we’ll dive into the company, what they offer, and whether or not their test prep strategies make sense for you.

What Is Veritas Prep?

At one time, Veritas Prep was one of the largest test prep companies available to students seeking admission to competitive graduate programs.

The company was founded in 2002 by Chad Troutwine and Markus Moberg, two students who met while attending Yale School of Management. They offered test prep for the GRE, SAT, and ACT but were best-known for their GMAT prep courses. Everyone on staff – including the founders – scored in the 99th percentile of the GMAT.

Veritas Prep offered both test prep courses and admissions counseling services. Its live online courses were popular with students who needed structured support. Admissions counselors hailed from schools like Harvard, MIT, and Yale, offering insights into their highly-selective admissions processes.

In June 2019, Veritas Prep was acquired by Varsity Tutors, an online learning platform. The two companies merged into Nerdy, an AI-powered learning company. In May 2022, Varsity Tutors finished integrating Veritas Prep into its platform and discounted its offerings.

What Does Veritas Prep Offer?

As a part of Varsity Tutors, Veritas Prep offers comprehensive test prep for the GMAT. Veritas Prep was known for its online classroom-based courses that are not provided through Varsity Tutors.

GMAT Exam Prep Bootcamp

The GMAT Exam Prep Bootcamp is a comprehensive exam prep course offered by Varsity Tutors. Taught by a live instructor for a group of six to nine students, the course includes four sessions that are five hours each. It’s designed to give students test-taking strategies to boost their scores.

The course covers how the exam is structured, strategies for specific sections, and how to approach difficult questions. It also covers content specific to each section of the GMAT: verbal, quantitative, integrative reasoning, and analytical writing. The goal: help students get a higher score with less study time.

GMAT 5- and 10-Week Prep Classes

For test takers that have a little bit more time to prepare for the GMAT, Varsity Tutors offers a 5- and 10-week prep class. Like the bootcamp, the prep classes dive into test taking strategies and work through each section of the test to get the highest score possible.

The 10-week class is broken up into 10 two-hour sessions each occurring one time per week. The 5-week course is similar but instead of one session per week, the 5-week course is conducted twice a week. Both courses are taught by live instructors, creating structure and accountability for students that need it.

Are There Any Fees?

Instead of paying per course, students enrolled in Varsity Tutors pay a monthly membership fee. Memberships can be purchased in 6-month or 12-month increments. The 6-month membership costs $299 per month while the 12-month membership costs $269 per month.

Each membership comes with four hours of tutoring and gives students access to unlimited live classes, not just the GMAT.

How Does Veritas Prep Compare?

Veritas Prep (through Varsity Tutors) is one of many college prep companies you can choose from. Their pricing is comparable to test prep services such as UWorld and Higher Scores, although the methods they use may differ.

For example, UWorld focuses on providing students with exam practice questions, called Qbanks. Its test prep services cover several college entrance exams, including the ACT, SAT, and MCAT. However, they don't offer any tutoring or live classes, online or in person.

Higher Scores Test Prep offers affordable test prep options in a self-paced learning format. While there are no live or in-person classes, students can choose an 8-12 week comprehensive course or a 10-day Quick Prep course if they are facing a time crunch.

Customer Service

Veritas Prep had 52 reviews giving it a 4.8-star rating on TestPilot. Former students recommended the quality of their test prep program and the extra support they provided during the admissions process.

Is Veritas Prep Worth It?

According to feedback from prior students, the teaching method established by Veritas Prep is worth it. Students reported that the live prep courses helped them structure their studying. Prep classes also came with homework to help students retain information better and focus on developing a test-taking strategy.

One of the most notable highlights is the care and support the teachers provided. Many students reported staying in contact with their teachers even after the course ended. Teachers provided advice and feedback on the actual college admissions process, going above and beyond just helping students prepare for the test.
