What Is Copper?

Copper is a rewards app that began as a banking fintech for teens in 2019. In May 2024, CEO Eddie Behringer explained in a letter to the Copper community that Copper would no longer offer bank deposit accounts and debit cards due to its banking partner suddenly sunsetting it's services. (Because Copper is not an actual bank, it relied on a banking partner to delivery deposit accounts to its customers).

What Does It Offer?

Copper let's you earn rewards on your everyday purchases by syncing your debit or credit card to the Copper app. You can also earn by playing games, completing surveys, scanning receipts, referring friends, and taking advantage of offers. According to Copper, members have earned over $6 million in rewards to date.

Here's a closer look at what it offers:

Earn Money When You Shop

Copper allows you to earn credits when you spend money at Copper partner brands. And you don't need to pull out a Copper loyalty card, it's all tracked automatically when you sync your debit or credit card to the Copper app. This is similar to other shopping rewards apps, such as Drop. While Copper doesn't share how many credits you can earn, judging by the screenshot below, it amounts to a couple of credits per purchase.

Other Earning Opportunities

In addition to shopping rewards, Copper lets you earn by playing online games, completing surveys, scanning and uploading your receipts, and taking advantage of limited-time offers and promotions.

How To Redeem Rewards

Copper rewards members with credits which they can redeem toward gift cards and cash via PayPal or Venmo. According to Copper, 500 credits has a value of $5.

Financial Education

In addition to rewards earning, Copper helps teach financial management to teens through bite-sized money lessons on its blog, called Money Moves. It's not a bad way for teens to pick up some financial knowledge while they use the app.

Customer Support

Copper is an online-only bank, so you won't be able to visit any local branches for in-person support. There isn't a publicly-listed customer service phone number either. Support is available only through email at [email protected].

Are There Any Fees?

Copper is a free app, with no monthly or annual fees. As a tip, never sign up for a rewards app that charges you a fee.

How Does Copper Compare?

Copper is very similar to other earning apps. It's shopping rewards feature works just like Drop app, which syncs to your debit or credit card for automatic rewards when shopping. Like Copper, Drop also lets you take advantage of in-app shopping offers for additional earnings.

Swagbucks is another popular get-paid-to app that lets you earn in a variety of ways. You can earn with paid surveys, by taking advantage of coupons, deals, and codes at various retail stores, and by playing online games. Swagbucks also offers a $10 bonus for signing up (1000 Swagbucks), and you can redeem your Swagbucks for gift cards or PayPal Cash.

How Do I Open An Account?

You can visit the Copper website to open an account. If you are under 18 years of age, you’ll need a parent or guardian to finalize the account documents. Once you've applied, you'll need to download the app to access your account and there is currently no way to login on a desktop browser.

How Do I Contact Copper?

Copper has a chatbot that is available 24/7 inside the app. According to Copper, it is able to answer 90% of members questions. If it cannot help, Copper will connect you to an agent through its ticketing system. Support hours are Monday - Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM PST.

You can also send an email to [email protected].

Is Copper Legit?

Yes, the Copper app is legit. It has a 4.8/5 star rating on the App Store (over 60,000 reviews), but only a 3.8-star rating on Google Play (13,000+ reviews). I perused several online forums to find out members are saying about the app. I noticed some confusion about why Copper is no longer offering banking services. One user referred to the switch as "sketchy". Other users felt that the app is fine, but that it's just one of many similar earning apps that do the same thing.

Is It Worth It?

If you're looking for an easy way to earn a few extra dollars each month, Copper might be worth trying out. Remember that none of these rewards apps will make you rich, but they may cover your Netflix subscription or the odd coffee here or there. The best way to maximize your earnings is by signing up for multiple apps, like Copper, Swagbucks, Drop, Survey Junkie, and more.
