Key Points

  • Magoosh is our top IELTS pick at $129 for six months, with up to 10 mock tests and unlimited AI grading for speaking and writing.
  • U.S. colleges want IELTS Academic, not General Training. The University of California system and UC Berkeley require a 6.5, and UC doesn't accept One Skill Retake scores.
  • IELTS costs about $340 at most ELS-run U.S. test centers as of October 2026, and up to $380 at some. The paper test was discontinued in the U.S. in June 2026.

IELTS is one of the main English tests U.S. colleges accept from international applicants, alongside the TOEFL, and IELTS says more than 3,400 U.S. institutions accept it, according to IELTS USA. The test is now computer-delivered in the U.S. for nearly everyone after the paper version ended in June 2026. Students planning how to pay for a U.S. degree should also see our best international student loans comparison.

IELTS prep is relatively cheap, and some of the best practice is free from the organizations that run the test. The courses below add structure, feedback on speaking and writing, and more mock tests. Our cost of studying abroad breakdown covers the bigger expenses that follow once you're admitted.

Best IELTS Prep Courses Of 2026

Take a free official practice test first, through the British Council's IELTS Ready or IDP, to find your weakest section. Then choose a course based on what you need most, whether that's practice volume, live teaching or detailed writing feedback, keeping your total college budget in view.

Magoosh offers the most complete IELTS course for the price. Premium costs $109 for one month or $129 for six months and includes up to 10 mock tests, 120+ video lessons, 850 practice questions, unlimited AI grading of speaking and writing and a score predictor, according to Magoosh's IELTS plans page. You can choose Academic or General Training content. Our Magoosh review walks through the platform.

Magoosh backs its plans with a target-band guarantee, a 7-day free trial and a 7-day money-back window. Unlimited AI feedback on speaking and writing is the standout feature, since those are the two sections hardest to practice alone. At $129, six months of prep costs less than half the U.S. test fee, a small share of the costs in our cost of studying abroad breakdown.

Why We Picked It

Lots of mock tests, unlimited AI speaking and writing feedback and a low price with a free trial. It's the best single pick for most U.S.-bound students, including those comparing international student loans.

Drawbacks

AI feedback isn't the same as a human examiner, and there's no live teaching. Students who want a teacher should look at E2 Language, or compare options in our Magoosh review.

On E2 Language's website

E2 Language sells IELTS packages from $69 for Express to $359 for Gold for buyers outside Australia, according to its package comparison. Express includes 25 live classes, and Bronze ($169) and above include unlimited live classes, AI-marked practice tests and teacher feedback on higher tiers. That's a lot of live teaching for the money, which helps students juggling college application deadlines.

E2 offers a money-back score guarantee on its Bronze, Silver and Gold packages, and says its mock test was designed in partnership with IDP and IELTS. Access lasts 90 to 365 days depending on the package. Students who mainly need speaking or writing help can buy a $99 Intensive package instead of a full course, keeping more money for study abroad costs.

Why We Picked It

The most live class time for the price, a money-back guarantee on mid-tier plans and a mock test built with IDP. It suits students who learn best from a teacher, similar to the learners in our average cost of tutoring research.

Drawbacks

Free trial length isn't stated, and the cheapest package caps live classes at 25. Self-motivated students may get more value per dollar from the course in our Magoosh review.

IELTS Advantage VIP course costs $497 for three months of access, five one-on-one writing feedback sessions and two personal lessons, according to its VIP page. A $10 diagnostic test comes with $100 off VIP if you upgrade. Writing Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1, according to IELTS, so expert feedback on essays can move your overall band, a point that matters for applicants targeting selective colleges.

IELTS Advantage offers a 30-day money-back guarantee and says it will pay for your next test if you miss your band after its team clears you as ready. Its sales page uses “today only” promo framing, so don't feel rushed by the countdown. At $497 it's the priciest pick on our list, roughly the cost of one and a half test attempts, as our study abroad costs math helps put in context.

Why We Picked It

Human, one-on-one writing feedback and a guarantee that covers your next test fee. It's the best pick for students whose Writing score is holding back their overall band, a common hurdle we see in international student questions.

Drawbacks

The highest price here and aggressive sales framing. Students who need broad practice rather than writing help can save with the course in our Magoosh review.

The British Council's IELTS Ready is free and includes two full mock tests with Reading and Listening scores, AI feedback on one Writing and Speaking mock, short courses and live webinars. IELTS Ready Premium, with 40 full mock tests, is free when you book your test with the British Council, which values it at $170. Whether U.S. bookings through IELTS USA centers unlock Premium wasn't clear, so ask when you book. Our international student loans page covers next steps after you test.

IDP offers a free app, live webinars, practice tests and free 30-day access to an online course developed by Macquarie University when you book with IDP, according to IDP. IDP Australia says paid options “aren't necessarily better than the free ones,” according to its official prep article. Start free, then pay only for the feedback you can't get elsewhere, and save the difference for study abroad costs.

Why We Picked It

Official practice from the organizations that run IELTS, at no cost. Every test taker should start here before buying a course, as we also suggest in our Magoosh review.

Drawbacks

Free tiers are limited, and Premium access depends on where you book. Students who need structured lessons or unlimited speaking feedback should add a course, like the live options from E2 Language or our college admissions resources.

Which IELTS Test Do U.S. Colleges Want?

U.S. colleges want IELTS Academic. IELTS says to choose Academic if you plan to study at the undergraduate or graduate level, and General Training if you plan to study below degree level or migrate, according to IELTS. Listening and Speaking are the same on both tests, but Reading and Writing differ, so make sure your prep matches the Academic version. Our college application checklist can help you track each school's rules.

IELTS Online, the at-home version, is Academic only and takes six to eight days for results, according to the British Council. Official U.S. pages don't say whether it's offered in the U.S., so most American test takers should plan on a test center. Factor travel into your study abroad budget if the nearest center is far away.

What Is On The IELTS Academic Test?

IELTS Academic has four sections, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and takes 2 hours and 45 minutes, according to IELTS. Speaking is a face-to-face, recorded interview with an examiner. In the U.S., the test is now computer-delivered after the paper test ended on June 20, 2026, according to ELS, which runs many U.S. centers. Our college admissions coverage explains how English scores fit into an application.

IELTS Academic Format (2026)
SectionQuestions Or TasksTime
Listening40 questions in 4 parts, recordings played onceAbout 30 minutes
Reading40 questions across 3 long passages60 minutes
WritingTask 1: describe a graph, table, chart or diagram (150+ words). Task 2: essay (250+ words)60 minutes
SpeakingThree-part interview with an examiner11 to 14 minutes
Total test time is 2 hours 45 minutes. Writing Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1. Source: IELTS. The College Investor.

Writing Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1, so spend more prep time on essays than on chart descriptions. In Listening and Reading, a Band 7 takes about 30 of 40 correct answers, according to IELTS scoring details, though the exact number varies by test version. Those benchmarks make a good practice target as you prepare your college applications.

How Is The IELTS Scored?

Each IELTS section is scored from 0 to 9, and your overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band, according to IELTS. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. That rounding rule is worth understanding before you plan prep, especially if you're close to a school's cutoff, as many applicants in our international student loans coverage are.

How One Section Can Move Your Overall Band (TCI Analysis)
ScenarioSection ScoresAverageOverall Band
Starting Point6.5, 6.5, 5.5, 6.06.1256.0
Raise Writing By Half A Band6.5, 6.5, 6.0, 6.06.256.5
Raise Speaking By Half A Band Instead6.5, 6.5, 5.5, 6.56.256.5
Order: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking. Rounding follows IELTS rules. Source: IELTS scoring guidance. The College Investor.

Here's our takeaway: a student at 6.0 who needs a 6.5 doesn't have to improve everywhere. Raising one weak section by half a band can push the average from 6.125 to 6.25, which rounds up to 6.5. Some schools also set section minimums, such as Michigan Tech's 6.0 in Speaking and Writing, so target your weakest skill first. That's exactly where feedback-heavy courses like those in our Magoosh review earn their price.

What IELTS Score Do U.S. Colleges Require?

A 6.5 overall band is a common requirement at selective U.S. universities. The University of California system requires a 6.5, according to UC Admissions, and UC Berkeley lists the same minimum, according to Berkeley. Requirements vary, so check each school's English proficiency page as part of your college application checklist.

Sample IELTS Requirements (2026)
SchoolIELTS MinimumOther Rules
University Of California (All Campuses)6.5No One Skill Retake, single-sitting composite only
UC Berkeley6.5Same as the UC system
Michigan Tech6.5At least 6.0 in Speaking and Writing, scores within 2 years
Source: University of California, UC Berkeley, Michigan Technological University. The College Investor.

One Skill Retake lets you retake a single section within 60 days of a computer test, according to IELTS, but U.S. availability isn't confirmed and the UC system doesn't accept it. Plan to hit your score in one full sitting. Scores are valid for two years, according to IDP, so time your test to cover your application deadlines and the financial aid steps that follow.

How Much Does The IELTS Cost In The U.S.?

IELTS costs $340 at most ELS-run U.S. test centers as of October 1, 2026, including a $15 administrative fee, and $380 in Cleveland and Nashville, according to ELS. The British Council's U.S. page lists a range of $280 to $340, which may not reflect the October increase. Budget for the higher figure, and compare it with the other costs in our study abroad expenses breakdown.

Cancel or move your test at least 15 days out to protect your money, according to the IELTS USA terms. Within four days, a transfer request is treated as a cancellation. Results can be mailed to up to five organizations free, and electronic delivery to institutions is unlimited, so you won't pay per school the way TOEFL test takers do after four reports. Our best TOEFL prep rankings cover the TOEFL fees.

IELTS Vs. TOEFL: Which Should You Take?

Both tests are widely accepted by U.S. colleges, so choose based on format, cost and timing. IELTS includes a live speaking interview with an examiner and costs about $340, while the TOEFL iBT costs $280 in the U.S. and takes about two hours, according to ETS. The UC system accepts either, with a 6.5 IELTS or a 4.5 on the new TOEFL scale, so compare both in our best TOEFL prep rankings.

Students who are more comfortable speaking with a person may prefer IELTS, while those who like shorter, screen-based tasks may lean toward the TOEFL. Take a free official sample of each before you pay for either, which keeps more money for the costs in our international student loans comparison.

How Long Should You Study For The IELTS?

Plan on about three months to raise your score by half a band. IELTS says it takes students three months on average to improve by up to half a band, and bigger gains came from studying more than 23 hours a week, according to IELTS. Students already near their target need less time. Build your plan around your college application deadlines.

  1. Take a free official mock test through IELTS Ready or IDP to find your weakest section.
  2. Confirm each school's requirement, including section minimums and whether it accepts One Skill Retake.
  3. Focus on your weakest section first, since half a band there can lift your overall score.
  4. Practice Writing Task 2 essays and speaking out loud with feedback, from AI tools or a teacher.
  5. Book your test 15+ days before you might need to move it, so a transfer stays free.
Did You Test Between August 2023 And September 2025?

IELTS acknowledged a marking error that changed 63,216 results for 62,794 test takers who received results between August 2023 and September 2025, according to an IELTS statement. Affected test takers were contacted and offered refunds or retests. If you tested in that window and are reusing the score, check the IELTS adjustments page before you submit, and keep your college application records up to date.

How We Picked The Best IELTS Prep Courses

We reviewed IELTS prep options available to U.S.-based test takers and compared prices, mock tests, speaking and writing feedback, live teaching, guarantees and free trials. We verified prices on each provider's site on October 11, 2026, and favored courses with clear Academic test content. Our editorial standards explain how we handle partner relationships.

Kaplan International runs live online IELTS classes, but it quotes prices only on request, so we didn't rank it. The Princeton Review doesn't offer IELTS prep in the U.S. We'll update this list as new courses appear, alongside our international student loans rankings.

IELTS Prep FAQs

Should I Take IELTS Academic Or General Training?

Take IELTS Academic for U.S. college admissions. IELTS recommends Academic for undergraduate and graduate study, and General Training for study below degree level or migration. See our college admissions coverage for other application steps.

What Is A Good IELTS Score For U.S. Colleges?

A 6.5 overall band is common at selective schools, including the University of California system and UC Berkeley. Some schools also set section minimums, such as Michigan Tech's 6.0 in Speaking and Writing. Track each requirement in your college application checklist.

How Much Does The IELTS Cost In The U.S.?

IELTS costs about $340 at most ELS-run U.S. centers as of October 2026, and up to $380 at some. Cancel 15 or more days ahead for a 75% refund. Our study abroad costs breakdown covers other expenses.

Can I Take The IELTS On Paper In The U.S.?

No, not in most cases. The IELTS paper test was discontinued in the U.S. as of June 20, 2026, according to ELS, and paper remains only for some test takers who need access arrangements. See our best TOEFL prep rankings if you're weighing the computer-based TOEFL instead.

Are Free IELTS Materials Enough?

Free official materials from the British Council and IDP are enough for some students, and IDP says paid options aren't necessarily better. Students who need speaking and writing feedback usually benefit from a course. Our Magoosh review covers a low-cost option.
