About This Scholarship

WoodmenLife is a not-for-profit fraternal benefit society founded in 1890 that pairs life insurance and annuity products with community service through local chapters. Its Focus Forward Scholarship is one of the largest member-only scholarship programs among U.S. fraternal societies, with up to 307 awards available each cycle.

The award structure is wide rather than tall: three students receive $10,000, four receive $5,000, and up to 300 receive $1,000. That means most winners land a $1,000 award, but the odds of winning something are far better than in a typical national contest because only members of qualifying WoodmenLife households can apply.

The membership rule is strict. The applicant must have at least three consecutive years of unlapsed WoodmenLife membership, and everyone in the household must be a WoodmenLife member in good standing. Families who already hold WoodmenLife coverage should check that every household member is enrolled well before the window opens, because the society states there are no exceptions or extensions to the deadline.

Eligibility

  • WoodmenLife member in good standing with at least three consecutive years of unlapsed membership
  • Every person in the applicant's household must be a WoodmenLife member in good standing (a "100% WoodmenLife family")
  • Recent high school graduate or current college or accredited trade school student who graduated high school in 2025 through 2027
  • Plans to enroll full time in undergraduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the entire 2027-2028 academic year
  • Previous recipients are not eligible to reapply

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I join WoodmenLife now and apply this year?

No. The applicant needs at least three consecutive years of unlapsed membership, so joining now would only help in a future cycle. Every household member must also be a member in good standing.

When will winners be notified and how is the money paid?

WoodmenLife says recipients receive an award email in mid-April 2027, and funds go by direct deposit to the student's school in early July 2027.

Is the deadline ever extended?

No. WoodmenLife's FAQ states there are no exceptions or extensions to the January 14, 2027 deadline.

Why Trust The College Investor

The College Investor has helped millions of readers navigate paying for college and student loans since 2009. Every scholarship in our database is individually reviewed by our team before it goes live, and re-checked regularly so deadlines and links stay current.

Our Scholarship Standards

A listing here means our team checked that the award is real, currently active, and actually pays out. We won't list a scholarship that:

  • Charges any kind of fee to apply
  • Makes you join a paid membership, or sign up for an app or service, just to be eligible
  • Has a privacy policy that would let the sponsor sell or misuse your information
  • Collects essays, ideas, or contact details mainly to feed the sponsor's marketing
  • Can't show a winner from the past 12 months, or offers no way to reach the sponsor

One nuance: established companies and nonprofits that run applications through their own systems may still be listed, even though creating an account there is part of applying.
