About This Scholarship
The Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit that has educated the public on vegetarianism and veganism since 1982, awards $45,000 in scholarships annually to graduating high school seniors who have actively promoted vegetarianism or veganism in their schools and communities. The current cycle offers one $10,000 award, five $5,000 awards, and additional runner-up prizes.
This is an activism-and-impact scholarship rather than a GPA contest. Judges want documented evidence — starting a school vegan club, changing cafeteria options, running community education campaigns, writing, or organizing. Applicants describe their activities in essay responses and back them up with recommendations and documentation.
Applications for students graduating in spring 2027 are being accepted now; the deadline is February 20, 2027, and VRG encourages early submissions beginning December 1, 2026. There is no application fee, and students can submit via the downloadable form or a typed document emailed to the group.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be vegan to win?
You must be committed to vegetarianism or veganism and show real efforts to promote it in your school or community — the strength of that activism is the core judging criterion.
