About This Scholarship

TMS, The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society, is the professional home for metallurgists and materials engineers who work in industries from aerospace alloys to battery materials. Through the TMS Foundation it awards two $5,000 Acta Materialia Inc. Undergraduate Scholarships each year, funded by the publisher of the journal Acta Materialia.

The award goes to sophomores and juniors enrolled full time in metallurgical or materials science and engineering programs. Winners also get a complimentary student registration for the TMS Annual Meeting and up to $500 in travel reimbursement to attend and receive the scholarship, which puts them in front of the employers and researchers who run the field.

Applicants must be Material Advantage student members, a $30-per-year program that gives students membership in TMS, ASM International, AIST, and ACerS at once. The written statement is capped at 200 words, so the three testimonials and your transcript carry much of the weight. TMS lets students apply for up to two of its scholarships per year, so pairing this with a division scholarship is a smart move.

Eligibility

  • Student member of Material Advantage ($30 per calendar year)
  • Current undergraduate sophomore or junior enrolled full time in a metallurgical or materials science and engineering program at a qualified college or university
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Relatives of members of the funding committee or division are not eligible
  • The award is offered through both TMS and ASM; students may apply through only one society each year

How To Apply

  • Join Material Advantage as a student member if you are not already one
  • Write an individual statement of no more than 200 words (double-spaced) on special projects, career plans, leadership, Material Advantage chapter involvement, and community involvement
  • Prepare a CV or resume and an up-to-date transcript
  • Line up three testimonials from educators, employees, or employers who know your background
  • Submit everything online from the award page by March 15, 2027 (paper and emailed applications are not accepted)

Do I have to be a TMS member to apply?

Why Trust The College Investor

The College Investor has helped millions of readers navigate paying for college and student loans since 2009. Every scholarship in our database is individually reviewed by our team before it goes live, and re-checked regularly so deadlines and links stay current.

Our Scholarship Standards

A listing here means our team checked that the award is real, currently active, and actually pays out. We won't list a scholarship that:

  • Charges any kind of fee to apply
  • Makes you join a paid membership, or sign up for an app or service, just to be eligible
  • Has a privacy policy that would let the sponsor sell or misuse your information
  • Collects essays, ideas, or contact details mainly to feed the sponsor's marketing
  • Can't show a winner from the past 12 months, or offers no way to reach the sponsor

One nuance: established companies and nonprofits that run applications through their own systems may still be listed, even though creating an account there is part of applying.
