About This Scholarship

The National Honor Society, administered by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, has awarded scholarships to outstanding senior members since 1946. In the current cycle the program is distributing $2 million to 600 students, with recipients judged on their demonstration of the four NHS pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The top 25 finalists — and their chapter advisers — earn an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., where the national winner is recognized.

Importantly for families, this is a direct student application, not a school nomination: any high school senior who is an active NHS member in good standing may apply, and there is no limit on the number of applicants per chapter. Students do need an NHS student account verified by their chapter adviser, so lining that up early in senior year matters.

The application opens September 3, 2026 and closes November 20, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. ET, with notifications arriving in mid-January 2027.

Eligibility

  • High school senior expecting to graduate during the current academic year
  • Active member in good standing of a National Honor Society chapter (NHS membership is the program requirement)
  • NHS student account holder verified by your chapter adviser
  • Planning to attend an accredited U.S. college, university, military institute, or trade school

How To Apply

  • Create your NHS student account and have your chapter adviser verify it before the application window
  • Complete the online application at nationalhonorsociety.org between September 3 and November 20, 2026 (5:00 p.m. ET)
  • Watch for notifications in mid-January 2027; the top 25 finalists travel to Washington, D.C. in late February

Why Trust The College Investor

The College Investor has helped millions of readers navigate paying for college and student loans since 2009. Every scholarship in our database is individually reviewed by our team before it goes live, and re-checked regularly so deadlines and links stay current.

Our Scholarship Standards

A listing here means our team checked that the award is real, currently active, and actually pays out. We won't list a scholarship that:

  • Charges any kind of fee to apply
  • Makes you join a paid membership, or sign up for an app or service, just to be eligible
  • Has a privacy policy that would let the sponsor sell or misuse your information
  • Collects essays, ideas, or contact details mainly to feed the sponsor's marketing
  • Can't show a winner from the past 12 months, or offers no way to reach the sponsor

One nuance: established companies and nonprofits that run applications through their own systems may still be listed, even though creating an account there is part of applying.
