NFMC Wendell Irish Viola Award
Offered by National Federation of Music Clubs
About This Scholarship
The Wendell Irish Viola Award is one of the few national prizes reserved exclusively for young violists. Run by the National Federation of Music Clubs, it awards $2,000 to the national winner and $1,000 to the runner-up, plus a $500 award in each NFMC region, so strong players have multiple chances at a four-figure or $500 prize in a single entry.
Violists between 12 and 18 compete by recorded audition through NFMC's regional judging structure. Because the award is instrument-specific, the field is far smaller than general string competitions, which makes it a smart target for serious viola students building pre-conservatory credentials.
Entrants need NFMC junior membership, typically through a federated private teacher or junior music club, and applications are due March 1 each year with requirements posted on the NFMC Junior Division page.
Eligibility

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Wendell Irish Viola Award amounts?
The national winner receives $2,000 and second place $1,000, with an additional $500 award in each NFMC region.
Why is there a viola-only award?
The award honors violist Wendell Irish and intentionally supports an instrument with fewer dedicated student prizes. Only violists ages 12 to 18 may enter, so the applicant pool is much smaller than general string competitions.
