About This Scholarship

The Foundation Scholarship Council, part of the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation, awards $1,500 scholarships to credit union members across Minnesota heading into post-secondary education. Awards are split evenly between traditional students — think graduating high school seniors and current college students — and non-traditional students returning to school later in life, which makes this one of the few statewide programs that welcomes adult learners on equal footing.

The application is refreshingly light: no transcripts and no letters of recommendation are considered. Selection turns almost entirely on a single essay of up to 500 words responding to the year's prompt about the financial challenges facing the applicant's generation. Essays are judged blind — including your name or your credit union's name in the essay is an automatic disqualification.

Eligibility runs through credit union membership: any member of a Minnesota Credit Union Network-affiliated credit union pursuing post-secondary education can apply, and membership at most Minnesota credit unions is open statewide for a nominal share deposit.

Eligibility

  • Member of a Minnesota Credit Union Network-affiliated credit union (any Minnesota credit union member qualifies)
  • Pursuing post-secondary education (traditional and non-traditional applicant tracks, with awards split between the two)
  • Willing to write a 500-word maximum essay on the posted financial-topic prompt
  • Essays containing the applicant's name or credit union name are automatically disqualified

How To Apply

  • Register on the Minnesota Credit Union Network's submission portal via mncun.org/fsc.html and create an online application.
  • Write and attach your essay (500 words max) responding to the year's prompt — no transcripts or recommendation letters are accepted.
  • Submit electronically by 11:59 p.m. Central time on November 30, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a member of a specific credit union?

No single credit union — membership at any Minnesota Credit Union Network-affiliated credit union in the state qualifies you to apply.

Are adult and returning students eligible?

Yes. Half of the awards are reserved for non-traditional applicants, so returning and adult students compete in their own pool rather than against high school seniors.

Why Trust The College Investor

The College Investor has helped millions of readers navigate paying for college and student loans since 2009. Every scholarship in our database is individually reviewed by our team before it goes live, and re-checked regularly so deadlines and links stay current.

Our Scholarship Standards

A listing here means our team checked that the award is real, currently active, and actually pays out. We won't list a scholarship that:

  • Charges any kind of fee to apply
  • Makes you join a paid membership, or sign up for an app or service, just to be eligible
  • Has a privacy policy that would let the sponsor sell or misuse your information
  • Collects essays, ideas, or contact details mainly to feed the sponsor's marketing
  • Can't show a winner from the past 12 months, or offers no way to reach the sponsor

One nuance: established companies and nonprofits that run applications through their own systems may still be listed, even though creating an account there is part of applying.
