About This Scholarship

The Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award backs young classical musicians whose families could not otherwise afford top-level training. Administered by From the Top, the nonprofit behind the long-running NPR showcase for young performers, the award provides a one-time package worth up to $10,000 to instrumentalists, vocalists, and composers between the ages of 8 and 18 who are still in elementary through high school.

The money is flexible by design: recipients have used it for private lessons, instruments, summer music programs, and travel for college auditions. Financial need is central to selection — the provider notes that 90% of past recipients come from households with adjusted gross income under $60,000.

Winning also carries a performance component. Recipients join From the Top's Learning and Media Lab Fellowship, which includes an appearance on the organization's NPR program. Roughly 20 musicians receive the award each year, and there is no fee to apply.

Eligibility

  • Ages 8-18 and currently enrolled in elementary, middle, or high school
  • Classical instrumentalist, vocalist, or composer with strong musical ability
  • Demonstrated financial need (most recipients' household AGI is under $60,000)
  • Commitment to participating in From the Top's Learning and Media Lab Fellowship

How To Apply

  • Apply through From the Top's Learning and Media Lab Fellowship application portal, which screens for award eligibility
  • Submit video or audio performance samples, teacher recommendations, family tax forms, and academic transcripts by the deadline for your grade level

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a high school senior to apply?

No. The award is open to students ages 8-18. Seniors in the Class of 2027 apply by the November 9, 2026 deadline, while younger students have until May 1, 2027 for their cycle.

Can the money be used for things other than tuition?

Yes. The award can fund private lessons, instrument purchases, summer camps, and college audition travel — expenses that go beyond a typical tuition-only scholarship.

Why Trust The College Investor

The College Investor has helped millions of readers navigate paying for college and student loans since 2009. Every scholarship in our database is individually reviewed by our team before it goes live, and re-checked regularly so deadlines and links stay current.

Our Scholarship Standards

A listing here means our team checked that the award is real, currently active, and actually pays out. We won't list a scholarship that:

  • Charges any kind of fee to apply
  • Makes you join a paid membership, or sign up for an app or service, just to be eligible
  • Has a privacy policy that would let the sponsor sell or misuse your information
  • Collects essays, ideas, or contact details mainly to feed the sponsor's marketing
  • Can't show a winner from the past 12 months, or offers no way to reach the sponsor

One nuance: established companies and nonprofits that run applications through their own systems may still be listed, even though creating an account there is part of applying.
