About This Scholarship
The Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship, administered by the Krell Institute, funds doctoral students who use high-performance computing to solve complex problems in science and engineering. The program has awarded more than 700 fellowships since its founding, and its most recent class included 29 new PhD students working in areas such as AI, quantum science, physics, and advanced materials.
Fellows receive a $45,000 annual stipend, full payment of tuition and required fees, and a yearly professional development allowance, with support renewable for up to four years — total stipend support alone can reach $180,000. A signature feature is a 12-week practicum at one of the DOE's national laboratories, where fellows work alongside government researchers on some of the world's most powerful supercomputers.
The fellowship has two tracks: an interdisciplinary science and engineering track applying computation to research problems, and a track for applied mathematics, statistics, and computer science students whose interests relate to emerging high-performance systems. Graduating college seniors and first-year doctoral students apply directly online.
Eligibility
- U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
- Senior undergraduate or student in the first year of doctoral study
- Planning full-time, uninterrupted study toward a PhD at an accredited U.S. university
- Research interests aligned with computational science or high-performance computing
