About This Scholarship

The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois calls itself the region's largest private scholarship provider, with over 125 unique scholarships and more than $500,000 awarded each year to students in the Rockford area. Its scholarship calendar is unusually generous: three separate cycles run each school year, starting with a fall cycle that opens November 1 — months before most community foundations even take applications.

Each cycle uses one universal application. Students answer a single set of questions and CFNIL's portal automatically matches them to every scholarship they qualify for in that cycle, with no separate per-scholarship applications. The fall cycle runs November 1 to January 1, the main winter cycle December 1 to February 1, and a spring cycle March 1 to April 1 catches late deciders.

The foundation serves Boone, Jo Daviess, McHenry, Ogle, Rock, Stephenson, and Winnebago counties, including Rockford and Belvidere. Students in the region should plan on the winter/main cycle for the deepest pool of funds and use the fall and spring cycles to extend their coverage.

Eligibility

  • Students in Northern Illinois: Boone, Jo Daviess, McHenry, Ogle, Rock, Stephenson, and Winnebago counties, including Rockford and Belvidere
  • Open to graduating high school seniors and current college students (individual funds set school, major, and need criteria)
  • Each cycle's universal application matches you automatically to scholarships you qualify for in that cycle
  • FAFSA and transcript materials are typically required — check the current cycle's checklist on cfnil.org

How To Apply

  • Create an account on CFNIL's online application portal at cfnil.org
  • Pick your cycle: fall runs November 1, 2026 to January 1, 2027; the winter/main cycle runs December 1, 2026 to February 1, 2027; spring runs March 1 to April 1, 2027
  • Complete the single universal application for that cycle — the portal matches you to every scholarship you qualify for
  • Submit supporting materials the cycle requires, such as transcripts and FAFSA documentation

Why Trust The College Investor

The College Investor has helped millions of readers navigate paying for college and student loans since 2009. Every scholarship in our database is individually reviewed by our team before it goes live, and re-checked regularly so deadlines and links stay current.

Our Scholarship Standards

A listing here means our team checked that the award is real, currently active, and actually pays out. We won't list a scholarship that:

  • Charges any kind of fee to apply
  • Makes you join a paid membership, or sign up for an app or service, just to be eligible
  • Has a privacy policy that would let the sponsor sell or misuse your information
  • Collects essays, ideas, or contact details mainly to feed the sponsor's marketing
  • Can't show a winner from the past 12 months, or offers no way to reach the sponsor

One nuance: established companies and nonprofits that run applications through their own systems may still be listed, even though creating an account there is part of applying.
