About This Scholarship

The Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS), the largest regional classics organization in North America, awards Manson A. Stewart scholarships each year to outstanding undergraduate classics majors. Each award is $1,000 plus a one-year CAMWS membership, funded by a bequest from Manson A. Stewart, a longtime benefactor of classical studies.

The award targets students in the middle of their degree: applicants must be current sophomores or juniors who have declared a classics major at a college or university within CAMWS territory, which spans more than 30 states across the Midwest and South plus parts of Canada. Students cannot apply cold; a faculty member in their department must nominate them, and no institution may put forward more than two students per year.

After nomination, the student completes a dossier with an application form, a brief essay, a transcript, and two letters of recommendation. The structure rewards students who build relationships with their classics faculty early, since the nomination deadline falls several weeks before the application materials are due.

Eligibility

  • Current sophomore or junior at a college or university in the CAMWS region
  • Declared major in Classics or a closely related classical field
  • Must be nominated by your department or program (maximum two nominees per institution per year)
  • Dossier requires a brief essay, transcript, and two letters of recommendation

How To Apply

  • Ask your classics department to nominate you; nominations are due January 6
  • Complete the application form and write the required brief essay
  • Have your transcript and two recommendation letters submitted with your dossier
  • Ensure the complete dossier reaches the Undergraduate Awards Subcommittee chair by January 30

Our Scholarship Standards

A listing here means our team checked that the award is real, currently active, and actually pays out. We won't list a scholarship that:

  • Charges any kind of fee to apply
  • Makes you join a paid membership, or sign up for an app or service, just to be eligible
  • Has a privacy policy that would let the sponsor sell or misuse your information
  • Collects essays, ideas, or contact details mainly to feed the sponsor's marketing
  • Can't show a winner from the past 12 months, or offers no way to reach the sponsor

One nuance: established companies and nonprofits that run applications through their own systems may still be listed, even though creating an account there is part of applying.
