About This Scholarship

ASHRAE, the century-old engineering society behind the standards that govern heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration, funds one of the most generous scholarship slates in the building-sciences world. A single application puts students in the running for every award they qualify for, including three-year scholarships worth $10,000 (the Willis H. Carrier, Gordon V. R. Holness, and Reuben Trane awards), a $7,000 one-year award, a deep bench of $5,000 one-year scholarships, and several $3,000 awards.

The program targets full-time undergraduates pursuing a Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree in coursework that prepares them for the HVAC&R profession — think mechanical, architectural, and energy engineering. Applicants need a cumulative college GPA of at least 3.0 or a top-30% class ranking, and their school must host an ASHRAE student branch, hold ABET accreditation, or meet an equivalent international standard.

ASHRAE student membership is recommended but explicitly not required, and there is no application fee. Selection weighs academics, recommendations, financial need, character, and potential service to the HVAC&R field.

Eligibility

  • Enrolled full-time in a bachelor's program in engineering or pre-engineering preparatory for the HVAC&R profession
  • Cumulative college GPA of at least 3.0, or class standing in the top 30%
  • Attend a school that hosts an ASHRAE student branch, is ABET-accredited, or meets equivalent accreditation standards
  • ASHRAE membership is recommended but not required; no application fee

How To Apply

  • Complete the single online ASHRAE Society Scholarship application, which automatically enters you for every scholarship you qualify for
  • Submit an official transcript and three signed letters of recommendation (instructor or advisor, employer, and a non-family character reference)
  • Apply by the April 1 Society Scholarship deadline; awards fund the following academic year

Why Trust The College Investor

The College Investor has helped millions of readers navigate paying for college and student loans since 2009. Every scholarship in our database is individually reviewed by our team before it goes live, and re-checked regularly so deadlines and links stay current.

Our Scholarship Standards

A listing here means our team checked that the award is real, currently active, and actually pays out. We won't list a scholarship that:

  • Charges any kind of fee to apply
  • Makes you join a paid membership, or sign up for an app or service, just to be eligible
  • Has a privacy policy that would let the sponsor sell or misuse your information
  • Collects essays, ideas, or contact details mainly to feed the sponsor's marketing
  • Can't show a winner from the past 12 months, or offers no way to reach the sponsor

One nuance: established companies and nonprofits that run applications through their own systems may still be listed, even though creating an account there is part of applying.
