About This Scholarship

The American Society for Enology and Viticulture is the scientific society for winemaking and grape growing, and its scholarship program is one of the largest sources of aid for students headed into the wine and grape industry. In 2026 it awarded $95,500 to 20 students.

There are two tracks. Traditional Scholarships pay $3,500 each, and three named awards (the Dennis Martin, Michael Vail, and James Wolpert scholarships) pay $7,500. The Presidents' Award pays $12,500 to one enology student and one viticulture student each year, and finalists who miss out are automatically considered for a Traditional Scholarship.

Applicants must be ASEV student members with dues ($50) paid by the March 1 deadline, full-time at an accredited four-year school in North America, and studying enology, viticulture, or a science basic to the wine and grape industry. Undergraduates need junior standing. Traditional Scholarship winners can reapply each year in open competition.

Eligibility

  • Current ASEV Student Member with dues paid in full by March 1 (student dues are $50 and include the online journal)
  • Full-time student at an accredited four-year college or university in North America; undergraduates must have junior standing
  • Major or graduate group emphasizing enology or viticulture, or a curriculum emphasizing a science basic to the wine and grape industry
  • Reside in North America (Canada, Mexico, or the U.S.) during the award year
  • Traditional Scholarship: minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA or 3.2 graduate GPA
  • Presidents' Award: minimum 3.6 cumulative GPA; past Presidents' Award recipients are ineligible

How To Apply

  • Join ASEV as a student member and pay the $50 dues before applying
  • Choose the Traditional Scholarship or Presidents' Award application tab on the ASEV Scholarship Programs page
  • Prepare answers to the essay prompts (300 words or less each), plus lists of schools, work experience, publications, and presentations
  • Gather a transcript, an acceptance letter if starting a new program, and recommendation letters (two for Traditional; three for the Presidents' Award, including one from an ASEV Professional Member)
  • Complete the online application in one sitting (it cannot be saved) and submit by March 1, 2027

Why Trust The College Investor

The College Investor has helped millions of readers navigate paying for college and student loans since 2009. Every scholarship in our database is individually reviewed by our team before it goes live, and re-checked regularly so deadlines and links stay current.

Our Scholarship Standards

A listing here means our team checked that the award is real, currently active, and actually pays out. We won't list a scholarship that:

  • Charges any kind of fee to apply
  • Makes you join a paid membership, or sign up for an app or service, just to be eligible
  • Has a privacy policy that would let the sponsor sell or misuse your information
  • Collects essays, ideas, or contact details mainly to feed the sponsor's marketing
  • Can't show a winner from the past 12 months, or offers no way to reach the sponsor

One nuance: established companies and nonprofits that run applications through their own systems may still be listed, even though creating an account there is part of applying.
