About This Scholarship

The American Nuclear Society (ANS) is the professional society for the scientists and engineers who design, operate, and regulate the nation's nuclear energy fleet and research reactors. With nuclear power enjoying its biggest build-out interest in a generation, ANS runs one of the deepest scholarship programs in the energy sector, spanning incoming freshmen through doctoral students.

Awards scale with academic level: incoming freshmen can expect about $1,000, undergraduates and two-year program students $2,000 to $2,500, and graduate students $3,000 to $5,000, with need-based awards of up to $5,000 also available. A single general application covers ANS's national scholarships, division-administered awards, and local section scholarships, and there are dedicated awards for community college and trade school students — a nod to the reactor operators and technicians the industry needs alongside its engineers.

The schedule runs on a fixed annual calendar: applications open November 1, the general application closes February 1, and the incoming freshman and community college/trade school deadlines follow on April 1, with notifications going out in mid-spring. Most awards require ANS student membership, which is inexpensive and can be established as part of the process.

Eligibility

  • ANS student members pursuing degrees in nuclear science, nuclear engineering, or related fields at accredited U.S. institutions (undergraduate and graduate awards)
  • Incoming freshman awards: high school seniors enrolling full-time in STEM programs with an interest in nuclear science and technology (must join ANS before funds are released)
  • Dedicated awards for community college and trade school students
  • Need-based awards available up to $5,000

How To Apply

  • Complete the application through the Scholarship Applications section at ans.org/scholarships. Applications open November 1; the general application (covering ANS national, division, and local section scholarships) is due February 1, and incoming freshman and community college/trade school applications are due April 1. Questions go to [email protected].

Why Trust The College Investor

The College Investor has helped millions of readers navigate paying for college and student loans since 2009. Every scholarship in our database is individually reviewed by our team before it goes live, and re-checked regularly so deadlines and links stay current.

Our Scholarship Standards

A listing here means our team checked that the award is real, currently active, and actually pays out. We won't list a scholarship that:

  • Charges any kind of fee to apply
  • Makes you join a paid membership, or sign up for an app or service, just to be eligible
  • Has a privacy policy that would let the sponsor sell or misuse your information
  • Collects essays, ideas, or contact details mainly to feed the sponsor's marketing
  • Can't show a winner from the past 12 months, or offers no way to reach the sponsor

One nuance: established companies and nonprofits that run applications through their own systems may still be listed, even though creating an account there is part of applying.
