1891 Financial Life College Scholarship
Offered by 1891 Financial Life (formerly National Catholic Society of Foresters)
About This Scholarship
1891 Financial Life, the Catholic fraternal benefit society formerly known as the National Catholic Society of Foresters, runs a College Scholarship for members working toward an undergraduate degree. Winners receive $1,000 a year, and a student who reapplies and wins each year can collect up to $4,000 in total.
The award is a member benefit, so eligibility hinges on the applicant's own certificate: applicants must have been beneficial members for one full year by the application deadline, with the certificate in force. Members must apply every year to stay in the running. Winners are chosen by an independent committee of educators, and the society says no officer or member has a say in selection.
The society also offers a Master's Scholarship ($1,000 a year, up to $2,000) on the same May 1 deadline and an Occupational Training Scholarship ($500 a year, up to $1,000) for vocational students, which can be submitted once at any point in the year. The society is licensed in 17 states, mostly in the Midwest and West, which limits who can hold a qualifying membership.
