Being able to repeatedly profit from the work you’ve already done sounds like a scam to many people. But as I’ve looked into more and more ways to earn extra cash in non-conventional methods, I’ve learned that many of these opportunities are 100% legit. They can also be pretty lucrative.
Unfortunately, since I’m not a student this next opportunity won’t work for me but it could be a great source of income for you…
StudySoup is an online platform that allows college students to purchase notes and courses from other students. The founders created the company in 2014 after witnessing firsthand just how overwhelming it can be for students when it comes to knowing exactly what to study.
This peer to peer learning platform has quickly grown and now houses over a million documents with 170,000 students signed up.
If you’re a student who needs last minute study guides or notes from a particular class you can hop on the site and pay for what you need. If you happen to be a student who’s an excellent notetaker you can sell your notes and study guides and potentially earn decent cash doing it.
Earning Money: Regular and Elite Notetakers
There are two kinds of notetakers; elite and regular.
If you want to get started with Study Soup quickly, simply create an account with the site and you can submit notes for sale as a regular notetaker. You’ll receive a commission on the sale of your study materials.
If you want to become an Elite Notetaker you’ll have to submit an application and set an appointment with a mentor who will walk you through the ropes.
According to the StudySoup website, Elite Notetakers can earn $300-$500 per course and the top notetakers have earned as much as $2,300 in a semester.
Elite Notetakers receive a base pay plus commission on their sales. Meaning, even if you made no sales of your notes you can still get some sort of payout. Commissions are 50% for Elite Notetakers.
Payments are made via Paypal or direct deposit.
Successful Elite Notetakers may also qualify for internship and mentorship positions.
Tips on Getting Started
While there are no particular formats you have to follow when submitting notes to StudySoup, there are some general guidelines that can increase your chances of success.
- Look at the examples of top performing study guides for formatting tips.
- If you submit hand written notes make sure they are clear and concise.
- To receive more sales of your notes you need to market them through various outlets.
- When you sign up you’ll be assigned a mentor who was a past successful Elite Notetaker. Take the time to get the advice you need from that person.
Selling notes isn’t a great side gig for everyone but if you are well organized and have some solid note taking skills then this could definitely be something worth trying out.
