About This Scholarship
The Lewis Latimer Scholarship honors one of the first influential African American inventors in the United States, whose improvements to the light bulb filament made electric lighting practical. It is funded by The NETwork Black Inclusion Community Partnership (BICP), a group of Black professionals in the communications industry at AT&T, and administered by UNCF.
The award targets incoming college juniors and seniors in STEAM fields — science, technology, engineering, art, and math — at any accredited four-year college or university, including HBCUs. That open school list makes this one of the more broadly available UNCF-administered awards; students do not need to attend a UNCF member institution. Eligible major categories span engineering, computer and information sciences, biological and biomedical sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, psychology, health professions, architecture, and visual and performing arts.
Applicants need a minimum 2.75 GPA and must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents. Selected recipients receive a one-time, need-based award of up to $2,000 for the 2026-27 academic year.
