About This Scholarship

The Fund for Education Abroad is a nonprofit dedicated to making study abroad possible for students who are typically underrepresented in it — first-generation students, community college students, students of color, LGBTQ+ students, and students with high financial need. Since 2010 it has awarded millions in scholarships specifically for education abroad.

One application puts you in the running for everything FEA offers: general scholarships, dedicated and named scholarships for specific student populations, and partner scholarships tied to particular program providers. Awards are pro-rated by program length, with funding up to $10,000 for a full academic year abroad. FEA is notably one of the few study abroad funders that explicitly welcomes DACA recipients alongside U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

The application requires two essays (300 and 600 words) and is competitive — FEA reports that recent cycles funded roughly 3 to 4 percent of applicants — but the single-application-many-scholarships structure makes it efficient for the effort.

Eligibility

  • U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or DACA recipient, at least 18 years old
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a U.S. college or university (graduate students not eligible)
  • Studying abroad for at least 14 days with credit transferring to your home institution
  • First time studying abroad since high school graduation
  • Demonstrated financial need (FAFSA-based)

How To Apply

  • Create an account in FEA's online scholarship portal and complete the single application, which covers all general, named, and partner scholarships
  • Submit two short essays (300 and 600 words max) plus academic and financial information
  • Winter/Spring 2027 application closes September 16, 2026 at 12pm noon ET — late applications are not accepted

Frequently Asked Questions

Can DACA recipients apply for FEA scholarships?

Yes. FEA explicitly accepts applications from U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and DACA recipients — a rarity among study abroad scholarship funds.

Why Trust The College Investor

The College Investor has helped millions of readers navigate paying for college and student loans since 2009. Every scholarship in our database is individually reviewed by our team before it goes live, and re-checked regularly so deadlines and links stay current.

Our Scholarship Standards

A listing here means our team checked that the award is real, currently active, and actually pays out. We won't list a scholarship that:

  • Charges any kind of fee to apply
  • Makes you join a paid membership, or sign up for an app or service, just to be eligible
  • Has a privacy policy that would let the sponsor sell or misuse your information
  • Collects essays, ideas, or contact details mainly to feed the sponsor's marketing
  • Can't show a winner from the past 12 months, or offers no way to reach the sponsor

One nuance: established companies and nonprofits that run applications through their own systems may still be listed, even though creating an account there is part of applying.
