About This Scholarship
The Gertrude M. Cox Scholarship was established in 1989 by the American Statistical Association's Committee on Women in Statistics and the Caucus for Women in Statistics to encourage more women to enter statistically oriented professions. It honors Gertrude Cox, a pioneering statistician and the first woman elected into the International Statistical Institute.
Two recipients are selected each year, each receiving $1,000: one woman in or entering the early stages of graduate training (MS or PhD) and one woman at a more advanced stage of training. The committee also names honorable mentions in most years, and the ASA publishes recipient lists annually — a long, unbroken track record that stretches back decades.
Application is limited to women who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada admitted to full-time study in a graduate statistics program by July 1 of the award year. Applications are due by March 1 and require a CV, a personal essay, three reference letters uploaded by their writers, all academic transcripts (unofficial accepted), and a headshot. No ASA membership or fee is required.

How To Apply
- Prepare your CV, transcripts from all institutions (unofficial accepted), a headshot, and a personal essay of at least one double-spaced page covering your program, how you will use your training, and examples of leadership, service, or mentoring
- Ask three reference writers to upload letters (maximum two pages each, PDF, with your last name in the file name) via the ASA's submission link
- Submit everything by the March 1 annual deadline
