AAPM Summer Undergraduate Fellowship Program Opening Soon
Offered by American Association of Physicists in Medicine
About This Scholarship
The American Association of Physicists in Medicine runs its Summer Undergraduate Fellowship Program (SUFP) to give undergraduates a 10-week, paid immersion in medical physics — the field behind radiation therapy, medical imaging, and radiation safety. Fellows conduct research in a medical physics laboratory and shadow professionals in a clinical setting, pairing with a mentor at a university, research facility, hospital, or clinic in the U.S. or Canada.
Each fellow receives a $6,000 stipend to cover living expenses during the program, which runs on a mutually agreed 10-week stretch between May and September. Fellows are also invited to the 2027 AAPM Annual Meeting in Columbus, Ohio, with complimentary registration and $500 toward travel.
The program targets students who have finished at least two years of undergraduate study in physics, engineering, or another science, with coursework through differential equations and at least one upper-level physics course. It is a full-time commitment — no summer classes or outside employment — and AAPM explicitly asks that the personal statement be written without AI tools.
Eligibility
- Completed at least two years of undergraduate study, not yet graduated, with at least one full semester remaining after the fellowship
- Declared (or eligible to declare) a major in physics, engineering, or another science
- Completed a differential equations course and at least one of modern physics, quantum mechanics, or electricity and magnetism (or engineering equivalents)
- Legal U.S. resident regardless of national origin or immigration status (DACA students welcome)
- Previous SUFP recipients are not eligible
How To Apply
- Open the application from the AAPM SUFP page when it becomes available on November 5, 2026
- Write and upload a roughly one-page personal statement (PDF) on your interest in medical physics — in your own words, without AI-generated content
- Upload an unofficial transcript and a CV using AAPM's required template
- Enter names and email addresses for two recommenders and confirm their letters are uploaded before the deadline
- Submit by 11:59 p.m. ET on February 9, 2027
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a scholarship or a paid research program?
It is a paid 10-week summer fellowship: you receive a $6,000 stipend for living expenses while doing mentored research in a medical physics lab and shadowing clinicians, rather than money applied to tuition.
Can I take summer classes or work a part-time job during the fellowship?
No. SUFP is a full-time commitment, and fellows may not take summer courses or hold other employment during the 10-week program.
Do I pick my own mentor?
Yes, in a matching process. Each fellow selects a mentor with a clinical or research project based at a university, research facility, hospital, or clinical site in the U.S. or Canada; matching runs March 22-26, 2027.
