One of my goals for 2011 was for The College Investor Portfolio to beat the S&P 500 by 8%. Well, in the 9 months since I started The College Investor Portfolio, I'm beating the S&P 500 by 15.8% which has delivered a total return of over 33%!
Last year when I made the last Changes to the College Investor Portfolio, I was very bullish on energy and insurance. While the energy plays haven't delivered the huge gains I was expecting, the insurance plays have delivered superbly. American Financial Group, Lincoln National Corp, Prudential Financial, and Protective Life Corp have all returned over 20% since joining the portfolio. Protective Life Corp has actually returned over 32% since joining the portfolio. The last insurer, Unum, is very close, returning over 19.5% since joining the portfolio.
A final play that I am happy with is American Captial Agency Corp. This is a REIT that invests in government-backed paper, specifically mortgage debt insured by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. With interest rates at all time lows, this company is able to provide a huge yield. I plan on holding this as long as interest rates stay low. Although the price hasn't fluctuated much, its huge yield more than makes up for it.
I would love to hear your opinions on The College Investor Portfolio. Do you own any of these stocks or are thinking about it? What abut the energy and insurance sectors?
