College Investor Portfolio Check-In – June 2011

June 15, 2011

college investor portfolio graphIf you haven’t checked in a while, here is how my College Investor Portfolio is doing! I’m currently beating the S&P 500 by 21.93% this year. What is really exciting is that I started the portfolio almost exactly 1 year ago, so that my annual return actually is about 37.62%. Not too shabby!

You can see by the graph at the right that even though the S&P has been declining over the past 6 weeks, my portfolio has only seen a very slight decline recently.

As I stated earlier in the year, I had a good feeling about energy, and prices have steadily increased over the past 6 months. This has provided great gains for Constellation Energy Group. Also, the insurance stocks have mostly performed well over the past 6 months. Travelers has seen a decline over the past 3 months due to the crisis in Japan.

I’m still a big fan on REITs. You can see that I own AGNC in the portfolio, and as I predicted earlier, people are starting to chase the yield. The price has steadily risen over the past month, which has lowered the yield a bit, but it is still over 15%.

The other great thing about this portfolio is that it has remained unchanged since 11/30/10. While I do maintain active strategies, the low turnover has saved on fees. All returns on the portfolio include dividends and subtract fees.

Here is a breakdown of the current holdings. I don’t see any major changes coming too soon.

Great results. With the recent decline in the market, did you add to any positions?

Just looking at the graph puts a smile! Nice healthy gains too!

I agree with your sentiment on REITS; recently added VNQ to my p/f.

I’ve been weathering the last few weeks by not looking at my portfolio and telling myself I’m in it for the long term. Probably not the best way to handle it but ignorance is bliss for now.

@Cashflowmantra – No positions have changed since last November. I haven’t added to or sold anything!

Cool to see TRV in there. One of my favorite stocks (I own it for the purpose of having at least SOME fixed income exposure) is getting walloped as a P&C insurance company. TRV has a bit more underwriting exposure, but man, it’s a bloodbath out there!

Your portfolio is in the green; that’s great! The last two weeks mine’s been in the red – so sad. :( Hopefully the June gloom will wear off soon.

Excellent yearly results! I would be interested to know your YTD results for 2011 not the 1 year results. My portfolio ROI melted from 13% to very low single digits in June thanks to Greece, at least I am still positive while out TSX is definitely in negative territory…

@ BeatingTheIndex: Since January, my portfolio is up 14.71% while the S&P is up only 1.59% with dividends.
