Enter the Frame Your Future Scholarship

scholarshipCollege is expensive.  Even community college, which is generally much cheaper than a four year university or a private college, can pack a punch to the wallet.  High school juniors and seniors who are college bound and their parents should be scouring the Internet, books, and the guidance counselors’ office to learn of all available scholarships to lower the cost of tuition.

Scholarships are Key to Financial Success After College

Sure, you could likely take out student loans to pay your college bill, but who wants to be saddled with all that debt after college?  Scholarships offer money that is free and clear.  You have no obligation to repay the money when you graduate, which means more of the money you earn is yours to advance your financial future and add to your retirement or to save for a house.  That’s much better than sending hundreds of dollars a month to service a student loan payment.

While many scholarships are highly competitive and well known, take the time to search for scholarships that might not be as well known, and, therefore, aren’t as competitive.  A student should see if their parents’ employer offers scholarships to children of employees.  Another great place to look is the Internet.

Finally, don’t dismiss any scholarship as too small.  Several smaller scholarships can add up to a significant chunk of your tuition bill.

To give you a head start on the college scholarship search, consider applying for the Frame My Future Scholarship Contest.  This scholarship is open to legal U.S. residents who will be attending a U.S. community college, undergraduate or graduate school full-time in 2014-2015.

This scholarship will appeal to those with a creative flair, which is a nice departure from typical scholarships.  To enter, submit an original creative image–photograph, collage, poem, drawing, painting, etc.–that fits the theme, “This Is How I Frame My Future.”  You’ll also need to include a short description.

Everything is submitted entirely online, and in another interesting twist, the 24 finalists will be chosen via a one-month public voting phase.

Entry into the scholarship contest ends on March 5, 2014.

Ultimately, 5 winners will be chosen, each winning a $1,000 scholarship.  The grand prize winner will also earn a $1,000 donation to the grand prize winner’s school.

Because this scholarship has been going on for several years, you can look at links to past winners’ projects to get a feel for what the judges are looking for.  The winners are quite a diverse group, but clearly creativity and drive are important.

When it comes to scholarships, you have to be a go-getter and actively search for scholarships and apply for them.  The process can be time consuming, but you’ll be rewarded richly if you win a few scholarships.  You’ll never know if you can win if you don’t enter.

You’ll be glad later that you worked so hard to earn scholarships when you bypass the student loan payments your friends are making.
